Shadle is a congregation: which is authentic, warm and down-to-earth, which seeks to live for Christ, which seeks to reach out in love, of small groups, where messages are biblical and practical, where people can question and disagree, where people laugh and have fun, which is not perfect.
Meet the Staff
Steve Lympus, Head Pastor
I love being a pastor at Shadle! This is a deeply authentic congregation who loves Jesus and loves our neighbors and loves to eat together. We spend most of our time feeding each other spiritually, relationally, and physically. Did I mention we like food around here?
I also love being married to Laura, who grew up in Southern CA, and now works as a Development Coordinator for a non-profit called Big Table (www.big-table.com). Yep, that involves food too! We share a home with two amazing boys, Theo and Gauge, and we're working on adopting more kids from the foster care system.
I grew up and went to college in Western Montana, and went to seminary in Vancouver (BC). Together with Laura, we’ve lived in Seattle (WA), West Yellowstone (MT), the East Bay Area (CA), and now Spokane since 2013.
We enjoy reading, watching family movies, cooking (and eating!), finding new restaurants (and eating!), hiking, bike-riding, sledding, cross-country skiing, wrestling, family football, and spontaneous Family Dance Parties. When all those things are done, I enjoy writing middle-grade fiction: https://wipfandstock.com/the-house-of-dunraven.html
Hope to share table with you soon,
John Edmondson, Family Ministries Director
Johnny is our Family Ministries Director. He enjoys the variety of working with kids, youth, young adults, and parents and creatively helping families in our community connect with each other and with Jesus. He loves connecting with students and staff at schools and helping various local organizations to collaborate. He is also on staff with the North Spokane YMCA and he’d love for you to join him for a group exercise class sometime :)
He grew up in the Sacramento area and came to Spokane to go to Whitworth University. He graduated in 2002 after studying Communication, Theology, and Music and meeting his wife in ballroom dancing class. He returned to WU in 2008 for their Master of Arts in Theology Program. In 2009 he and his wife celebrated the arrival of their first baby girl and their second was born 3 years later.
Johnny continues to enjoy learning new things and trying new experiments such as Growing Neighbors (www.growingneighbors.org). He likes reading and meeting with friends to discuss what they’re learning while enjoying green smoothies and cinnamon rolls. He also enjoys embarking on spontaneous adventures, playing and coaching sports, and snuggling with his family.
Eileen Wilmot, Office Manager
I love working here, love the people I work with, and feel very blessed to be part of this church family.
I am married with children (7) and grandkids (18) great grandkids (5 or more?) and am part of four+ small groups here at Shadle, each one special and wonderful to be part of. If I could have my heart’s desire, everyone in my family and every friend I have would know the Lord. My hobby is finding treasures at garage sales and thrift stores. I also really enjoy decorating and “playing house” in our home (or anywhere). I enjoy all kinds of sports (watching and cheering). We have a dog we are crazy about (I show pictures upon request). Two of my favorite things at Shadle: our belief in the power of prayer and our desire to grow in our faith.
Others serving SPPC
Tom Shook, Music Director
Eileen Hartzog, Treasurer
George Stephens, Custodian
Matt and Alyssa Bell, Yoked Co-Associate Pastors
Matthew and Alyssa are Associate Pastors at SPPC.
Matthew Bell was born in El Paso, TX and traces his faith journey back to his growing up years in the Southwest. After graduating from New Mexico State University, he pursued and received a Masters in Computer Science from the University of Pittsburgh. Having sensed a strong call to pastoral ministry, Matthew attended Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, graduating in 2006 with his Masters in Divinity. In 2007, he began PhD studies in Historical Theology at Durham University in England and has recently completed his PhD program. As part of his call, Matthew "tent-makes" by teaching at Whitworth University in the Computer Science department. Besides these formal dimensions of his vocation, Matt also is an avid homebrewer and likes playing role-playing games.
Alyssa Bell grew up in Spokane, WA. After graduating from Whitworth University with degrees in Theology and Church Music, Alyssa worked for several years as the Director of Music at a church on the West Coast of Washington. Alyssa began her seminary work at Fuller Northwest in Seattle and then transferred to Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in 2009 to finish her Masters in Divinity. In 2008 she met and wowed her husband, Matthew, who she then married in July of 2009. Two years later, God blessed them with a precious daughter, Theresa Joy, who Alyssa raises in partnership with Matthew with a gusto and panache to match the wee bairn’s enthusiasm for life. In addition to embracing these disciplined blessings, Alyssa is an occasional composer and inspires her otherwise nerdy husband towards a healthier, active lifestyle.
Courtney Durant, Childcare Ministries Coordinator
Courtney grew up in the small town of Davenport, Washington and then went to college at Whitworth University in Spokane. While at Whitworth, Courtney met her husband while working on a leadership team together. They got married after graduating and settled into Spokane for a couple of years until they had the opportunity to move to the UK. The couple spent just under a year and a half in Bristol, England before moving back and fully settling into Spokane.
Courtney is now the Childcare Ministries Coordinator at Shadle as well as a volunteer on the youth team working with middle schoolers. While figuring out her long-term plan, Courtney is working part-time retail and opening an Etsy shop (HandmadeJoyCo). She spends her spare time sewing, watching TV with her husband, and hanging out with friends. SOME of her favorite things include: autumn, plaid, cookies, Harry Potter, ice cream, sunshine, Disney, colors, peanut butter, the outdoors, dogs, and being social.
Our Presbyterian Heritage
What are Presbyterians? Mainly, we believe in the sovereignty of God, the authority of scripture, justification by grace through faith and the priesthood of all believers. So how are we different from other Christians? Basically, we're not. But we have a history of reformed theology and a way of governance that we have shared with other believers around the world since the early 1500s.
